Católica Porto Business School organises Python Porto Summer School

Friday, August 2, 2024 - 14:52

From 22 to 26 July, Católica Porto Business School hosted the Python Porto Summer School. This programme, which brought together Master's, PhD, and final-year undergraduate students with an interest in finance, aimed to deepen their knowledge of the Python programming language. Python is one of the most relevant languages today, and knowledge of it is a common job requirement in the financial services industry.

The programme was organised into five practical sessions, in which the students acquired knowledge through lectures and practical exercises. The programme began by introducing Python, moved on to data cleaning and processing fundamentals, and then covered univariate analysis and data visualization.

In the last session, the students applied the knowledge acquired during the previous sessions to a case study. The project involved applying the Python language to unstructured data using a Natural Language Processing problem (NLP allows computers and digital devices to recognise, understand, and manage text and speech by combining computational linguistics).

The Python Porto Summer School enabled participants to apply the concepts learned to real problems in the business context. After learning the basics of Python, the students learned how to implement tasks in tools frequently used by researchers, such as NumPy, Pandas, and Matplotlib.

João Rafael Almeida, an auxiliary professor in the informatic field and a researcher at the Institute of Electronic and Informatics Engineering of Aveiro (IEETA) of the University of Aveiro was in charge of teaching the course.

The teaching quality of the Python Porto Summer School matches the high standard of the other Summer Schools organised by Católica Porto Business School. It offers participants an enriching learning experience that combines theory with practice and is strongly connected to the reality of the business market.
