Católica Porto Business School student presents dissertation on Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability at European summer school

Beatriz Faria, a student on the MSc in Management programme, specialising in Service Management, at Católica Porto Business School, will represent the institution at the Europaeum Summer School on AI and the Digital Future, which will take place at the University of Luxembourg from 7 to 9 July 2025.

The student's master's thesis, entitled "GenAI and the Pursuit of Sustainability: a Qualitative Study of International Organizations", was selected for presentation at an academic meeting. For her supervisor, Cristina Trocin, "this is a significant achievement, as Beatriz will have the opportunity to present her work to an international audience of researchers in the fields of Humanities, Social Sciences and related areas, contributing to a multidisciplinary exploration of this year's theme".

The study explores how international organisations are incorporating Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to respond to sustainability challenges. Among the conclusions, it highlights the fact that GenAI is mainly applied for economic and social objectives, with its potential for environmental sustainability still marginal.

For the student, to participate in an international event with fellow scholars "is a chance to turn research into action—to challenge ideas, learn, and shape how GenAI impacts and serves people, planet, and the economy".

Beatriz's participation comes within the scope of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa's connection to the Europaeum network, which organises annual thematic summer schools at European universities. This year's theme is dedicated to the impact of artificial intelligence and the digital transition, with debates ranging from employment and privacy to equity and algorithm control.
