"Cod may be at risk of disappearing from our tables (...) Cod prices have risen by more than 50% in three years (...) Inflation is not solely to blame. It is mainly the result of European Union sanctions against Russia (following its invasion of Ukraine), which supplied much of the frozen cod used by the Portuguese industry. Since 2024, 12% tariffs have made imports more expensive, and since May 2025, two of the largest Russian shipowners have been banned from selling to the EU. Norway has come to dominate the market, but at prices that challenge Portuguese wallets."
