The challenges of Neo-Luxury

Católica Porto Business School is pleased to welcome Gilles Lipovetsky, one of today's greatest philosophers and thinkers, for a talk on the challenges of neo-luxury and how to anticipate what the luxury of the future will be.

Mónica Seabra-Mendes, director of the Executive Course in Luxury Management, will lead the conversation.

Gilles Lipovetsky
A French philosopher, Lipovetsky is one of today's most original thinkers. With a degree in Philosophy from the University of Grenoble, he has received honorary doctorates from universities in Canada, Bulgaria, Portugal (Aveiro University [2013]) Mexico, Colombia and Brazil. A theorist of hypermodernity and postmodernity, he is considered a leading intellectual on the subjects of fashion and consumption.

He is the author of bestsellers such as ‘The Empire of the Ephemeral - Fashion and Its Destiny in Modern Societies’, ‘The Age of Emptiness - Essays on Contemporary Individualism’ and ‘The Twilight of Duty - The Painless Ethics of the New Democratic Times’. His books have been published in several countries and translated into more than 18 languages.

In the French government, he was a member of the National Curriculum Council until 2005 and is a member of the Council for the Analysis of Society, a body that supports the French Prime Minister and is chaired by the French philosopher Luc Ferry. In 2003, he was awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honour. Gilles Lipovetsky believes that the consecration of well-being triumphs in post-modern society. He has just launched his latest book in France: ‘The New Age of Kitsch. An Essay on the Culture of Excess’.
