Social innovation can be, and often is, rooted in its territoriality. It becomes a territorial phenomenon when embedded in social relations, institutions and spaces. Driven through social enterprises and when clustered across sectors or geography, social innovation can challenge the financialised character of markets and spaces. In fact, one might argue that social innovation provides the basis for a reorganisation of the local economy; social innovation occurs in response to local problems through a mobilisation of local resources and becomes a focal point to meet unmet needs, encourage sustainable practices within the economy, build up community resilience and even help radicalise local democracy.
This presentation reports on two initiatives that have arisen to support the work of social enterprises in the Liverpool City Region.
This seminar will be held in a hybrid format.

Alan Southern works in the field of inclusive economic growth at the Management School of the University of Liverpool, and also at the Heseltine Institute for Public Policy, Practice and Place. His current research is focused on the social economy, particularly enterprise in low-income communities. |
