"If we believe the world is fair but observe grave injustices, we need to remove this dissonance from our minds. One possible way would be to change the belief. However, as mentioned earlier, it tends to persist despite the facts. And, since we are not motivated to abandon the comfort of our belief, we seek to act upon reality – or distort it.

One such effect is to devalue the injustice. For example, research suggests that people who believe in a fair world underestimate the injustices occurring in their organisation. They thus maintain their belief – but do nothing to remove the injustice. More perversely, they denigrate the character of the innocent victim of the unfairness and blame them for it."
