Joana Pinho is an Assistant Professor at Católica Porto Business School (CPBS); researcher and PI at CEGE ‑ Research Centre in Management and Economics; and external collaborator in the research centres of the Faculty of Economics of Porto (Cef.Up) and the University of Vigo (RGEA).

Joana Pinho made is undergraduate studies in Applied Mathematics at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto (2003‑2007), having concluded it with the highest average grade of her year and, consequently, received the Prize António de Almeida Engineer. As an undergraduate student, she developed her first research work under the support of 2 grants from the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.

In 2007, Joana Pinho enrolled in the PhD program in Economics at the Faculdade de Economia do Porto (FEP). She made her thesis under the supervision of António Brandão and Hélder Vasconcelos. In her dissertation, Joana Pinho studied issues of Industrial Economics, focusing on the economic impacts of anti‑competitive practices among firms. The thesis, defended in 2011, was Approved with Honor.

From 2012 to 2017, Joana Pinho was a postdoctoral researcher funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). In 2012, she was affiliated with the Faculdade de Ciências Económicas e Empresariais of the University of Vigo (under the supervision of Carlos Hervés‑Beloso) and, from 2013 to 2017, she was affiliated with FEP (under the supervision of António Brandão). From January to June 2016, Joana Pinho visited the Toulouse School of Economics, a leading institution in the field of Industrial Economics, and developed her research under the supervision of Bruno Jullien and Yassine Lefouili.

Joana Pinho has published 14 articles in international journals (listed in the Scopus database and the Thomson‑Reuters Journal of Citation Reports) and 1 book chapter. Joana Pinho regularly participates in scientific meetings in her research area, having presented at 23 international conferences and 9 seminars by invitation. In 2020, one of her works received the "GEE/ANACOM: Papers on Competition in Telecommunications and Digitization in the Economy" award. Joana Pinho has contributed as a reviewer to several scientific journals with recognized international merit.

Joana Pinho has a considerable network of scientific collaboration, having several co‑authors affiliated with national and foreign institutions, and being a member of research teams for national and international projects. Joana Pinho is currently part of two teams of research projects funded by FCT.
