Future of food and sustainability with scientist Vandana Shiva in debate in Porto

"Food and Environmental Transition: Time to Listen to Nature" is the title of the International Conference where environmental activist Vandana Shiva, scientist and board member of the International Forum on Globalization, also known as "Gandhi of grains", will give a keynote speech. An event organized by the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto, within the scope of INSURE.hub – an initiative of the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia and the Católica Porto Business School with Planetiers New Generation – and by the Serralves Foundation. The Conference will occur on October 30th, starting at 2:30 p.m., in the Serralves Foundation Auditorium.

Discussing and reflecting on topics in ​​sustainability, regeneration, biodiversity and food systems that will impact society in the next 100 years are the objectives of this international Conference.

The Conference will be divided into three distinct parts. The first panel will address the theme of “Biodiversity and Regeneration” and will feature the participation of Helena Freitas, director of Serralves Park, where she will address nature and the future using the park as an example; Luís Rochartre, senior consultant at Planetiers New Generation & INSURE.hub who will talk about the new era of natural-based investments that explore voluntary carbon credits; and António Vasconcelos, co-leader of Planetiers NG and INSURE.hub to address the theme of the emergence of progressive business leaders with sustainable regenerative purposes.

The second panel will have the theme “Food Systems”. It will be attended by Marta Vasconcelos, professor and researcher at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, who will address the topic of diversification of protein sources; Manuela Pintado, professor at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia and director of the Center for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF/ESB/UCP) and co-leader of INSURE.hub, which will address the topic of valuing food waste. There will also be a presentation by Ondina Afonso, president of the Continente Producers Club, and Pedro Rocha about the Noocity project.

Vandana Shiva, Indian scientist, environmental activist and founder of the non-governmental organization Navdany, whose main objective is promoting and conserving organic farming, seed biodiversity and workers' rights in India, will present in the third and final part of the Conference. To comment on this presentation, the panel will feature the participation of Helena Freitas, Manuela Pintado and Filipe Araújo (vice-president of the Porto City Council), moderated by Arminda Deusdado, journalist and general director of the production company Farol de Ideias.

The opening of the Conference “Food and Environmental Transition: Time to Listen to Nature” will be charged by Ana Pinho, chairman of the Serralves Foundation, and Isabel Capeloa Gil, rector of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. The Conference will occur in the Serralves Foundation Auditorium on October 30th at 2:30 p.m. Entrance is free, subject to prior registration.
