Nuno Martins é doutorado em Economia pela Universidade de Cambridge, e licenciado em Economia pela Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Porto), tendo feito a agregação em História do Pensamento Económico também na Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

Actualmente é professor catedrático na Universidade Católica Portuguesa onde lecciona as disciplinas de História do Pensamento Económico e de Filosofia Social e Ética.

Leccionou também na Universidade de Cambridge e na Universidade dos Açores.

É membro do Cambridge Social Ontology Group, e do quadro editorial de várias publicações académicas.

Publicou o livro The Cambridge Revival of Political Economy em 2013 pela Routledge, e diversos capítulos de livro internacionais, bem como numerosos artigos em várias revistas académicas internacionais nas áreas da Economia e da Filosofia, incluindo, entre outras, as seguintes revistas:
