The Professor Jacinto Nunes Prize is awarded annually. It distinguishes, for each of the selected educational establishments, the student who obtained the best final average for the Degree in Economics in the previous academic year. With this award, the Bank of Portugal intends to contribute to recognising merit in an area of study central to its mission.

Created in 1987 under the name “Prémio Banco de Portugal”, the prize for the best students of the Degree in Economics was renamed in 2016 in honour of professor Manuel Jacinto Nunes, one of the most illustrious economists of the second half of the 20th century in Portugal. In addition to being Vice-Governor (1960-1974) and Governor (1974-75 and 1980-85) of the Bank of Portugal, Manuel Jacinto Nunes was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in the IV Constitutional Government (1978-79).
