The course – to be conducted totally online - provides a foundation of knowledge and use of Structural Equation Modelling. SEM is a powerful analytical tool within the social sciences that overcomes the limitations of traditional multiple regression by enabling the simultaneous inclusion of multiple dependent variables, reciprocal effects, indirect effects, and the estimation and removal of measurement error through the inclusion of latent variables in one model.
Objective
The main objective is to provide participants with a training experience that enables them to develop skills for both, developing a real understanding of structural equation models, and being able to thoughtfully apply them to their own data.
Target audience and entry requirements
This course is aimed at those interested in getting acquainted with structural equation modelling in an applied perspective, namely PhD students and researchers in the fields of marketing and behavioral sciences.
Applicants can come from other fields of study, since they have interest in these techniques. Applicants can come from any country.
Programme Outline
- Statistical Foundations of SEM
- Path analysis
- Confirmatory Factor Analysis
- Structural Equation Models with latent variables
- Multigroup analysis
- Other applications of SEM
Structure
This course will feature lectures on the main topics outlined above across six working days. Classes will be held from 14:00 to 18:00, allowing students from different locations (e.g., Brazil and other European countries) to participate. Students will receive daily assignments to be completed outside of class, where they will apply the concepts and procedures taught in sessions to a real dataset. The results of these assignments must be submitted by email by July 7, 2024. There will be no exam.
Teaching
Building on the knowledge gained from previous summer schools, Professor Carla Martins will oversee all teaching activities. In "Meet the Researchers" sessions, we will feature the participation of other colleagues and researchers with expertise in SEM who will present case studies. Applicants will have the opportunity to interact with our researchers, which may include our colleagues: Cristiana Lages, Maher Georges Elmashhara, Paulo Duarte, and Susana Costa e Silva. These researchers will share their practical experiences and present insights from their own research.
